The Power of Showing Up: Why Chamber Involvement Matters
There are a lot of ways to grow a business. Marketing plans. Social media. Cold calls. Referrals. But sometimes the most powerful growth strategy is the simplest one: showing up in your local business community.
For Kelly and me, that has meant being active members of the Roanoke Regional Chamber. And in 2025, that decision changed the trajectory of our business.
You Truly Never Know Who’s In The Room
Last year, we didn’t just renew our membership — we leaned in. We chose a few small, affordable sponsorships that aligned with our budget and our audience. One of those was sponsoring a monthly Chamber board meeting. That sponsorship included a 10-minute presentation to the board.
But those ten minutes led to:
A phone call from the head of communications at a large local company
A deeper conversation about their needs
A one-year retainer contract
It is now one of the largest contracts we’ve secured to date — and an incredible opportunity to make meaningful impact for them and for us.
Here’s the part that still amazes me: The gentleman who recommended we receive that call had seen our presentation… but we had never officially met.
That’s the power of reputation built in real time.
(Don’t worry — the thank you note is written, and we’ll make sure we cross paths soon.)
Chamber Membership Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All
One of the best things about Chamber involvement is this:
You can engage at the level that works for you.
Attend events when you can.
Join a committee.
Sponsor something small and strategic.
Get in rooms that stretch you.
Share your story when the opportunity comes.
You don’t need a massive budget. You need intentional presence.
Chambers create spaces where your name can be heard in large rooms — rooms you might not otherwise have access to. And those rooms are filled with decision-makers, connectors, and advocates.
Local Partnerships Just Make Sense
When we support local organizations, we strengthen the entire ecosystem:
Businesses grow.
Jobs are created.
Nonprofits are supported.
The local economy thrives.
It’s not just networking. It’s community-building. And community-building compounds over time.
A Grateful Note
We are deeply grateful to the Roanoke Regional Chamber for the work they do to support our business community — and for consistently putting the right people in the right rooms.
Kelly and I believe in local partnership. We believe in showing up. We believe in investing where we live and work.
And sometimes, a 10-minute presentation can turn into something far bigger than you ever imagined.
If you’ve been on the fence about joining your local Chamber, let me offer this gentle nudge:
You never know who’s listening.
Cheers,
Bethany
