Powering Smiles: When Purpose and Profession Collide

There are moments in business when everything just clicks… when the work you do and the impact you want to make finally meet in the same space. Last week was one of those moments.

Through our partnership with Appalachian Power Company (APCo), we had the opportunity to support Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Charities (AHCDC) during their two-day extraction clinic. This clinic serves individuals who otherwise may not have access to dental care, many of whom have been waiting a long time for relief, for care, and ultimately, for a reason to smile again.

In just two days, 199 patients were served and 919 teeth were removed. This alone is a powerful reminder of both the need and the impact of this work. And while the clinical care happening inside those walls was life-changing, what stood out just as much was everything happening around it.

A Mission of Mercy—Wrapped in Care, Grace, and Laughter

What I witnessed at AHCDC can best be described as a mission of mercy wrapped in care, grace, and laughter.

Every patient who walked through those doors was treated not as a number, but as a person - as the incredible human being they are. There was dignity in every interaction, compassion in every conversation, and a consistent willingness to go the extra mile.

For many, this experience was about more than dental care. It was about being seen, being cared for, and being given the opportunity for a fresh start.

These same patients will return in the coming months to receive dentures; completing their journey and, quite literally, restoring their smiles.

Meeting the Need—Now and For the Future

Behind the scenes, AHCDC is also working to expand its impact in a significant way. The organization is in the process of adding seven new state-of-the-art operatories, increasing capacity from 14 to 21 treatment rooms. This expansion will help reduce a current 3,100-patient waiting list, shortening wait times from an estimated 24–30 months to 12–18 months.

This kind of progress doesn’t happen without partnership—it happens because organizations like the Appalachian Power Foundation choose to invest in real solutions that change lives.

Showing Up Where It Matters Most

APCo’s support helped strengthen that experience in meaningful ways.

  • Providing lunch for staff and volunteers who were working long, demanding days, was one of the most appreciated contributions. It allowed the team to stay focused on patient care without interruption.

  • APCo volunteers stepped in wherever needed, helping keep breakrooms and restrooms clean, assisting with daily upkeep, and staying through the end of the day to help reset the space. It wasn’t glamorous work, but it was essential and it mattered.

  • Outside, the APCo tent created a space for connection. Patients and family members stopped by to ask questions, learn about available energy assistance programs, and engage in meaningful conversation.

  • Simple touches, like offering drinks and light snacks to those waiting, made a noticeable difference. When wait times are long and emotions can run high, those small acts of care go a long way.

When Work Becomes Purpose

I’ve planned a lot of events over the years. Corporate meetings. Incentive trips. Celebrations. Activations. But this was different. This filled my cup.

This wasn’t about attendance numbers or production value. It was about people—real people, with real needs—being met with dignity, compassion, and care. And just as importantly, the people who make it all happen: the dedicated staff and volunteers who show up, serve wholeheartedly, and make a lasting impact every single day.

To be able to bring together my passion for event planning and my heart for serving the community—to step into a space like this, contribute in a meaningful way, and help another organization do the same—is something I don’t take lightly.

It’s more than rewarding.

It’s a dream come true.

A special thanks to the APCo team for entrusting us to support your community engagement efforts and allowing us to take part in such a worthwhile event with the AHCDC.

Cheers,

Bethany
